چکیده
HotOS XIV Opening Remarks Summarized by Rik Farrow ([email protected]) Petros Maniatis, Intel Labs, the PC chair, explained the ground rules for the HotOS ’13. Presenters had only 10 minutes, with a few minutes for questions and answers as the next presenter set up his or her laptop. Each talk session was followed by a half-hour open mike session, where participants were welcome to speak on any topic, although the discussions were generally related to ideas brought up during the previous session or earlier in the workshop.

Matt Welsh opened the workshop with a quick description of how it was structured. Each speaker had only 10 minutes for his or her presentation, with five minutes allotted for questions. Participants could interrupt the speaker during that 10 minutes. At the end of two sessions (five or six presentations), there would be a 45-minute discussion session, where the topics might involve the previous...
متن کاملPractical Security Systems with Smartcards
Secure hardware is a useful tool for enhancing computer system security. Traditionally, researchers have attempted to build secure operating systems by creating secure hardware and developing on top of it. Our approach is to integrate commodity secure hardware, i.e., smartcards, into existing operating systems. This paper describes three projects aimed at practical secure operating systems base...
متن کاملOperating System Directions for the Next Millennium
We believe it is time to reexamine the operating system’s role in computing. Operating systems exist to create an environment in which compelling applications come to life. They do that by providing abstractions built on the services provided by hardware. We argue that advances in hardware and networking technology enable a new kind of operating system to support tomorrow’s applications. Such a...
متن کاملOperating Systems for Component Software Environments
Although component software has emerged as one of the most significant and commercially successful technologies of the past few years, few operating systems are designed to host and manage component software effectively. Components impact OS architectures in areas of security, process isolation, code sharing, installation management, and user interface design. A more radical question is: can ef...
متن کاملHey, You Got Your Compiler in My Operating System!
Several operating systems projects revolve around moving functionality above or below the kernel “red line” to increase flexibility or performance. We describe how a general model of partial evaluation encompasses this trend. The operating systems community should not be content with a single interface between applications and the operating system, even if that interface allows extension below ...
